    The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has enacted several regulations regarding the operation of drones in the United States. Over and above these regulations, Iowa has also introduced laws for the safe use of drones in the state.

    Drone Laws in Iowa State

    These drone laws apply in the entire state of Iowa. You must follow these regulations before flying drones in the state of Iowa.

    House Bill 2289 (2014)

    According to this bill,

    • No state or political subdivision is allowed to use UAVs to enforce traffic laws.
    • Information gathered by UAV without a search warrant is not admissible as evidence in a criminal or civil proceeding.

    House File 2492 (Section 20)

    According to this rule,

    • It is illegal to operate in, on, or above a facility and any contiguous real property comprising the surrounding grounds of the facility. Exceptions apply to the law enforcement agency or a person who has permission from the authority in charge of the facility.
    • This rule does not apply to commercial operators that use UAVs in compliance with federal aviation administration regulations.

    City and County Drone Laws in Iowa

    It is important to know the potential drone ordinances before flying a drone in any city or county in Arkansas so as not to violate any of its local laws.

    Iowa State University UAS Regulations

    • To operate a UAS on Iowa State University property, permission is required from Iowa State University.
    • For research purposes, prior approval is necessary from the Office of Research Integrity.

    What types of flights are not allowed on the campus of Iowa State University?

    • A UAS may not be used to monitor or record activities where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy on university property. Examples include, but are not limited to, restrooms, locker rooms, and residence halls.
    • A UAS may not be flown in a Flight Restriction area on university property.
    • Any operation endangering public safety.

    Can students fly a UAS for part of a class curriculum?

    Students may fly a UAS for part of a class curriculum under Part 107 rules, with prior ISU approval. This includes consultation on acceptable flying site locations and standard operating procedures.
