With the launch of the Mavic 3 last week, pilots were excited they may get a new mapping drone. Even we were excited that the Mavic 3 could replace the phantom as a mapping drone. The specifications leaked showed that the Mavic 3 would have a mechanical shutter.
With the launch of the Mavic 3, the specifications are now out on DJI’s website. When we visit the specifications list of the Mavic 3, there is no mechanical shutter listed. Then Drone Deploy dropped the official bomb over the weekend. Drone Deploy emailed all users stating
“All this means that the Mavic 3 is not yet compatible with any mapping software, including DJI’s and DroneDeploy’s.”
When the Mavic 3 comes in at just over $5,000, drone pilots have to calculate the real value of the drone. With the right value, we can justify a higher cost of this new drone. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of value in 4k 120fps… There is a lot of value with dual cameras and extreme zoom. Without a mechanical shutter and SDK, however, meaning the drone won’t work for mapping… the value of the drone goes down substantially.
We even wrote about calculating the value of the Mavic 3 last week. It seems that calculation will have to change. Unless DJI is going to release the SDK of the drone to the market as a whole. Why would DJI not release the SDK for this drone?
In the Drone U community app, members had mentioned the cheaper Mavic 3 could be a mapping powerhouse. Yet without a mechanical shutter, or SDK availability to control the drone… the drone may not offer as much value as we had all thought.
With a muted response on the Mavic 3, it makes you wonder if this new DJI drone is really a new “platform of drones.” We would assume that DJI will launch the SDK of the Mavic 3 sometime. For now, the Phantom 4 Pro V2 remains the mapping powerhouse drone for years to come.
