With recent DJI Mavic 3 leaks, one key feature was overlooked, showcasing the Mavic 3 might be DJI’s new Mapping drone.
Drone pilots worldwide have been waiting for another portable mapping drone. DJI might be delivering that with the Mavic 3 pro. Industry rumors have swirled that the Mavic 3 drone might replace the powerhouse mapping drone, the Phantom 4 Pro. There haven’t been any leaks of a new phantom in the last few years. DJI had even stopped manufacturing the Phantom back in 2019, only to bring it back in early 2020.
While we have all been waiting for a powerful new drone to conduct mapping missions, most of DJI’s latest drones have sported smaller sensors. Most of these newer drones, like the Mavic Air 2s showcase robust features. Yet not of the new drones have included a mechanical shutter.
This week we learned a lot about the new Mavic 3 Pro and Cine Models. With the newest leaks coming out this week, one powerful specification was overlooked. The Mavic 3 Cine drone specifications showcase shutter speeds. The shutter speeds are also differentiated. The specification leak showcases an electronic shutter speed and a mechanical shutter speed. This means the Mavic 3 could be DJI’s newest Mapping drone by offering a mechanical shutter.
Could this small specification showcase that DJI is planning to replace the Phantom with the Mavic 3 drone? Frankly they could be. With a mechanical shutter, DJI creates a new hyper-portable drone that can complete drone jobs at scale. While drones sporting electronic shutters can map, it takes a lot longer to complete acquisition and processing of the images to create usable 2D Maps.
With DJI supposedly offering a Hasselblad Micro 4/3 sensor on the Mavic 3, the quality of drone mapping could skyrocket. Drone Mapping could get easier and faster with a larger camera sensor. Yet imagine the color detail of our 2d maps and 3d models with a Hasselblad sensor. 3d Modeling has become more widespread as industries like Film Production have been using 3d models across departments. With DJI launching this new Mavic 3 drone with a mechanical shutter, it could foreshadow what to expect out of this new mapping drone.
Keep an eye out for Mapping acquisition applications to offer integration. This could be our next sign that DJI is indeed planning on replacing the Phantom with the Mavic 3 drone.
