After a decade working on client projects for Netflix, NBC, and the NTSB, what surprised me is how little the shot list itself matters. Good footage comes down to discipline. Fly slowly. Commit to the move. Start recording before you think you need to.

Before you fly any of them, let’s first understand what actually makes a shot read as cinematic.
What Makes a Shot Cinematic
Three things separate a cinematic shot from drone footage: Speed, intention, and duration.
Fly slowly. Almost every amateur shot moves too fast. Cut your instinct in half, then halve it again. Most cinematic drone moves happen between 2 and 8 mph.
Commit to one move. Do not orbit while climbing while yawing. Pick a single motion and hold it. Complexity reads as chaos on screen.
Give the shot room. Start recording before the move begins. Keep recording after it ends. Your editor needs those handles.
With these three principles in place, here is the full vocabulary at a glance.
14 Types of Shots to Deliver Best Drone Footage
The term ‘cinema’ refers to a series of techniques used to create moving images. Cinematographers use various types of shots, such as panoramic, wide-angle, and telephoto, to tell stories through images.
Each shot has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, a wide-angle lens gives you a wider view of the scene, but it also makes objects look smaller. On the other hand, a telephoto lens lets you zoom into a subject from far away, but it also makes things appear larger.
Here are the 14 different types of shots for cinematic drone footage:

1. Helix Shot (also called: Spinning Elevation Shot, Spiral)
The helix orbits your subject while climbing or descending. The result is a spiral path that reveals scale as the frame rises.
Fly it: Start an orbit. Then add gentle up-elevator. Tilt the gimbal down as you climb so the subject stays framed.
Settings: Climb slowly. Aim for a full circle every 8 to 12 seconds.
Level: Intermediate. Three inputs run at once.
Use it for: Tall buildings, towers, lighthouses, waterfalls.
Avoid: Turning more than three full circles. Two is usually plenty.
Automate it: Helix mode ships on most current drones and flies it cleanly.
2. Diagonal Rise with Yaw (or Half Moon Bay Shot)
The diagonal rise climbs along a diagonal path while you yaw through the middle of the move. It combines three inputs and doubles as a training drill.
Fly it: Start low at one corner of your scene. Climb diagonally toward the opposite side. Halfway through, begin a slow yaw. Finish high and turned.
Settings: Fly 4–6 mph. Keep the yaw rate slow and even.
Level: Intermediate.
Use it for: Coastlines, bays, wide open scenes. Also as a stick-control drill.
Avoid: Rushing the yaw. It should be barely noticeable while it happens.
Automate it: No. Fly it manually. It sharpens your coordination.

3. Fly-Over (also called: Object Shot, Crane Reveal)
The fly-over skims low toward a foreground object, then rises over it to open the scene behind. It reads as a near miss followed by relief.
Fly it: Line up on the object from a distance. Fly toward it low and level. Climb in a straight line as you reach it. Then hold.
Settings: Fly 8–15 mph on approach. Speed sells the near miss.
Level: Intermediate.
Use it for: Opening shots, scene transitions, tree lines, rooftops.
Avoid: Climbing too early. The tension comes from staying low as long as you dare.
Automate it: No. Timing the climb is a judgment call.
This drone cinematic shot is meant to engage the clients or audience watching the video.
4. Fly-Through Reveal (or Obstacle Shot to Reveal Subject)
The fly-through reveal descends or pushes through a gap, then opens onto your subject. It uses the obstacle to build anticipation.
Fly it: Find your gap first. Walk it if you can. Start above or behind the obstacle. Descend through in a straight line. Then level out on the subject.
Settings: Fly 2–4 mph. Turn obstacle avoidance off if the gap is tight, and only if you have practised.
Level: Advanced. This shot ends careers when rushed.
Use it for: Dramatic entries, forest work, architectural reveals.
Avoid: Flying a gap you have not scouted. Also avoid GPS-dependent flight near structures where signal drops.
Automate it: No. Fly manually and consider ATTI mode if GPS is unreliable.
This is a common drone cinematography technique used by photographers who capture motion pictures.
5. Tilt-Down Reveal (or Object Shot with Large Reveal Down)
The tilt-down reveal flies forward over a ridge or rooftop while the gimbal tilts down. The landscape below appears gradually.
Fly it: Approach the edge with the gimbal level. As you cross it, tilt down slowly and steadily. Match your tilt speed to your forward speed.
Settings: Fly 5–10 mph. Practise the tilt-wheel motion until it feels smooth.
Level: Intermediate. Gimbal control is the hard part.
Use it for: Cliff edges, mountain ridges, rooftop reveals, waterfalls.
Avoid: Jerky tilt input. Feather the wheel rather than pushing it.
Automate it: No good automated equivalent. Practise the manual version.
6. Pull-Back Reveal (also called: Slow Reveal Out of Subject, Dolly Out)
The pull-back reveal flies backward away from your subject. Context floods into frame as the subject shrinks. It is the classic closing shot.
Fly it: Start tight on the subject. Pull back in a straight line. Add a slow climb if you want more reveal.
Settings: Fly 4–8 mph. Rear obstacle sensors matter here. Check them before you commit.
Level: Beginner.
Use it for: Ending a video, showing isolation, revealing scale.
Avoid: Flying backward without a clear path behind you. Scout it first, every time.
Automate it: Dronie or Rocket in QuickShots gets close, but manual gives you better pacing.
7. Top-Down Shot (also called: High Angle Shot, Bird’s-Eye, Nadir)
The top-down shot points the camera straight down at 90 degrees. It flattens the scene into graphic shapes and patterns.
Fly it: Climb over your subject. Tilt the gimbal fully down. Then either hover, drift slowly, or yaw for a rotating effect.
Settings: Fly 100–400 feet up, depending on the subject. Midday light works here, unlike most drone work.
Level: Beginner.
Use it for: Roads, crops, pools, crowds, coastline, anything with pattern or symmetry.
Avoid: Losing orientation. At full nadir, you cannot see what you are flying toward.
Automate it: Waypoints handle straight-line top-down passes well.
8. Orbit Shot (also called: Arc Shot, 360 Shot, Point of Interest)
The orbit shot circles your subject at a fixed distance and altitude while the camera stays locked on it. The drone flies around the subject in a smooth arc while keeping the camera focused on it. It is the most requested shot in commercial drone work.
Fly it: Position the drone at your subject’s eye level or above. Push the roll stick one direction. Feed in opposite yaw to keep the subject centred. Hold both inputs steady for a smooth arc.
Settings: Fly 3–5 mph. Keep your radius between 50 and 150 feet. Larger radius forgives sloppier stick work.
Level: Beginner manually. Trivial with automation.
Use it for: Property hero shots, vehicle reveals, wedding portraits, any single strong subject.
Avoid: Orbiting too fast. And never orbit more than 1.5 times in a delivered edit. Audiences lose interest.
Automate it: Point of Interest mode flies this perfectly on every current DJI drone.
9. Follow Shot (also called: Tracking Shot, Chase)
The follow shot trails a moving subject at a steady distance. The background streams past while the subject stays fixed in frame.
Fly it: Match your subject’s speed before you start recording. Hold your distance. Let the subject lead.
Settings: Match the subject’s pace exactly. Sport mode helps with fast vehicles.
Level: Intermediate. Speed matching takes practice.
Use it for: Cars, bikes, boats, runners, animals.
Avoid: Chasing. If you fall behind and accelerate, the shot jerks. Anticipate instead.

10. Parallax Orbit (also called: Foreground Orbit)
The parallax orbit circles your subject with an object in the near foreground. That foreground rushes past while the subject stays still, which creates powerful depth.
Fly it: Find a tree, wall, or rock between you and the subject. Orbit as normal, but keep that object 10 to 20 feet from the drone. Let it sweep through frame.
Settings: Fly 3–4 mph. Use obstacle avoidance, but know it may fight you near the foreground.
Level: Advanced. Crash risk is real.
Use it for: Dramatic reveals, luxury real estate, anything that needs depth.
Avoid: Flying it in wind. Gusts push you into the foreground object.
Automate it: Do not. Automation cannot judge the foreground gap. Fly this one manually.
11. Pedestal Rise (also called: Vertical Rise, Crane Up)
The pedestal rise climbs straight up with the camera held level. Nothing else moves. The shot reveals height and grandeur.
Fly it: Hover close to your subject. Apply steady up-elevator. Touch nothing else.
Settings: Climb 3–6 mph. Keep it constant. Consistency is the whole shot.
Level: Beginner. It is the easiest shot to fly and one of the most effective.
Use it for: Monuments, statues, tall trees, building facades, above-the-clouds reveals.
Avoid: Drifting sideways. Watch your position, not just your altitude.

12. Side Follow (also called: Parallel Track)
The side follow flies parallel to your moving subject. You see them in profile while the background sweeps past behind them.
Fly it: Position beside the subject. Match speed. Fly a straight parallel line and keep your distance constant.
Settings: Stay 20–60 feet to the side. Closer reads as more urgent.
Level: Intermediate.
Use it for: Runners, cyclists, horses, cars on open road.
Avoid: Drifting closer as you fly. Pick your distance and hold it.

13. Push-In (also called: Dolly In)
The push-in flies slowly toward a static subject. The frame tightens gradually. Tension builds without a cut.
Fly it: Start wide. Fly forward in a straight line at constant speed. Stop before the subject fills the frame.
Settings: Fly 2–4 mph. Slower is almost always better.
Level: Beginner.
Use it for: Building tension, introducing a location, opening a narrative sequence.
Avoid: Accelerating mid-move. Constant speed is what makes it feel deliberate.
Automate it: Waypoints flies a very consistent push-in.
14. Aerial Pan (also called: Hover Pan)
The aerial pan holds a hover while the drone yaws slowly. Only the camera turns. It surveys a scene calmly.
Fly it: Hover at your chosen altitude. Apply a small, steady yaw input. Nothing else.
Settings: Take 15 to 25 seconds for a 180-degree turn. Slower reads better.
Level: Beginner.
Use it for: Establishing a location, surveying a site, showing a full property boundary.
Avoid: Panning fast enough to blur. And do not pan into the sun.
Automate it: Most drones offer a panorama mode, though that produces stills rather than motion.
180-Degree Shot
The 180-degree rule keeps your camera on one side of an imaginary line drawn between two subjects. Cross that line, and your subjects appear to swap places on screen. The edit stops making sense.
It matters more in drone work than most pilots expect. Orbits cross the line constantly. So do follow shots that swing around a subject.
Two ways to handle it. Either stay on one side of the line for the whole sequence. Or cross it deliberately in a single continuous move, so the audience sees you cross. A cut across the line breaks continuity. A visible flight across it does not.
Manual Flight or Automated Modes?
Current drones automate several of these shots. Point of Interest flies orbits. Helix flies spirals. ActiveTrack handles follows. Waypoints repeats any path exactly.
So should you use them? It depends on the job.
Use automation when you need consistency. Repeat passes for a construction timeline. Multiple takes of the same orbit. Solo shoots where you also run a ground camera.
Fly manually when you need control. Anything with a foreground object, tight spaces, or shots where you adjust the framing as the scene changes.
One warning. Automated modes rely on GPS and vision sensors. Both degrade near buildings, under trees, and over water.

Camera Settings Behind Every Cinematic Shot
Your flight path means nothing if the exposure is wrong. Four settings carry most of the weight.
- Shutter speed: double your frame rate. Use 1/50s at 24fps. That gives natural motion blur.
- ND filters: required in daylight to hold that shutter speed. ND16 covers most bright conditions.
- Frame rate: 24fps for cinematic delivery—60fps or higher when you plan to slow the footage down.
- Colour profile: shoot D-Log if you will grade. Shoot standard if you will not.

How Many Shots Does a Client Video Need?
A 60-second client video usually needs 12 to 18 usable clips. Shoot more than you need. Fly each shot twice.
