Step-by-step instructions for foreign nationals who wish to fly their drone in the United States

Today’s question is about foreign nationals who wish to fly their drones in the United States. As a foreign national, what is the best and easiest way to get permission to fly your drone in the United States?

Our caller, Paul from Canada has a great question about drone laws for foreign nationals. Because of recent changes to Canadian drone laws, foreign nationals can now fly their drones in Canada after clearing a simple online exam. Paul is wondering if it is as easy for foreign nationals to fly a drone in the United States.

As drone technology becomes more mainstream, more and more foreign nationals are flying their drones in the United States. However, to avoid getting into serious legal trouble, all foreign nationals MUST follow the law of the land.

To answer Paul’s question, we first state Part 107 laws and recreational drone laws for foreign nationals.

Prairie Village passes new city ordinance that affects hobby drones, funny drone fishing story, new Skydio R2 drone updates, DJI increases prices by 15%, Phantom 4 Pro availability and much, much more….

Our first story this week about Prairie village, Kansas. A new city ordinance has introduced regulations that places stringent restrictions on hobby drones. And, any non-compliance shall be treated as a Class C demeanor. This is not the first time that towns and cities have attempted to set up their own rules (think the Michael Singer case).

As we have repeatedly discussed on Ask Drone U, cities and towns can place restrictions on takeoff and landing. But, no one but the FAA has the right to regulate navigable airspace. So, how can drone pilots advocate against this unjust ordinance? Watch this video to learn how. Downloading our Drone Advocacy Field Kit will also help you greatly in this regard.

Our next story is a light-hearted one about drone fishing (with a twist) in Australia. An Aussie man, Sam Foreman decided to have some fun with his large custom-built drone. In this video that went viral last week, you can see Sam (who is sitting in a chair) being lifted by his drone over the Upper Coliban Reservoir in Central Victoria state. With a beer in one hand and a fishing rod in another, Sam certainly seems to be enjoying his ride. As far as we can tell, no laws were broken. But it seems that Sam might get into trouble with CASA, the Australian regulatory authority for his little joyride.

Next, we move on to some interesting DJI news. The long-drawn US-China trade wars and the ensuing rise in tariffs have forced market leader, DJI to increase drone prices by 15%. Along with drones, prices of drone accessories and DJI Care Refresh have also been affected. While many manufacturers have absorbed this increased cost, DJI has decided to pass this increased cost to the consumer.

Was it possible for DJI to absorb this increased cost? Or, are they taking undue advantage of its market dominance?

Considering FAA’s visual line of sight rule, what is the maximum area that you can map with your drone?

Today’s question is about drone mapping. As per Part 107 regulations, what is the largest area that you can map with a drone?

Our caller for today works as an IT manager on a farm. Because he is an amateur drone pilot, he was asked to research the feasibility of drone technology in farming by his employer. Our caller wishes to use the eBee Sensefly for mapping.

For those who are unaware, the eBee Sensefly is an autonomous drone capable of extremely long flight times. So, do Part 107 rules apply to autonomous drones like the eBee? And,  is it mandatory to have a pilot in command for autonomous drones like the eBee? If yes, as per the Visual Line of Sight Rule, what is the maximum area that you can map with the eBee?

How do I ascertain if a drone school is the right fit for me?

Today’s question is about drone training instructors & drone schools. How do you vet a drone training instructor, and ascertain that he is qualified enough to teach you the nuances of drone flying?

Our caller, Sebastian from Charlotte, North Carolina, has come up with a great question today. Recently, a drone community that Sebastian was a part of started offering drone training programs. As far as he is aware, the “drone instructors” teaching the program have little to no flying experience and are just looking to cash in on an excellent business opportunity. So, how can Sebastian determine with certainty that a drone training school is qualified to teach and that his money does not go down the drain?

Sebastian has highlighted a growing problem that is plaguing the drone industry today. As drone usage grows by leaps by bounds, a large number of dubious training schools and instructors have jumped into the fray. But, with no governing body authorized to qualify drone schools and instructors, how can you, as a pilot, determine if a particular school is a right fit for you?

Step by Step instructions for getting airspace authorization to fly in zero grid airspace

Understanding Photogrammetry Concepts for Professional Drone mapping
