The main topic for this News show is drone safety. The FAA has announced a slew of measures for increasing airspace safety. From educational measures like the “Drone Safety Awareness Week” to the industry-government body, UAST (Unmanned Aircraft Safety Team), the FAA is focused on addressing security concerns that have been plaguing the drone industry. Shortly, hobby and commercial pilots will be required to pass a new knowledge and safety test as well. Will these measures fulfill the dual objective of mass drone adoption and greater airspace safety?
In other drone news, Amazon made a big splash at the 2019 FAA UAS Symposium as it shared some exciting details about its drone delivery program. After Google’s Wing Aviation, Amazon is likely to be the second company to foray into drone deliveries. According to industry speculations, up to 80% of all Amazon deliveries could be ultimately made by drones. But with Remote ID yet to be implemented, it remains to be seen when drone deliveries set flight.

Interview with DJI’s Brendan Schulman @ the 2019 FAA UAS Symposium| What Steps is DJI taking to Ensure Mass Drone Adoption and Safer Skies?
In our second show from the 2019 FAA UAS Symposium, Drone U Chief Pilot, Paul Aitken interviews DJI’s Brendan Schulman to discuss how the industry leader is working to ensure safer skies and greater drone adoption.
Recently DJI released a whitepaper titled “Elevating Safety” which describes 10 key steps for improved airspace safety. Some of the recommended measures include using ADS-B receivers and Remote ID, increased enforcements and mandatory Geofencing. It is admirable that DJI, being the industry leader, is taking the initiative in this matter. However, implementation of these safety measures is a challenge that raises several concerns as well.
- For instance, while Remote ID might address the issue of security, how do we ensure that the DSP’s privacy is not compromised?
- DJI’s newest drones are equipped with AirSense, a system that allows drones to receive ADS-B signals from other aircraft. While this system is intended to warn pilots about potential hazards, will it also interfere with the ability of manned aircraft to communicate with one another?
- We also discuss the advantages and pitfalls of DJI’s renewed Geofencing system, GEO V2.0. Sure, this system prevents irresponsible pilots from flying in high-risk locations. But, shouldn’t we allow responsible and qualified pilots to fly drones that are free of Geofencing?
- As far as enforcements are concerned, while a lax approach certainly does not suffice, empowered authorities might hurt the growth of this nascent industry. How do we strike this rather fine balance?

DJI News, Aeromexico 747 Collision, DOD Selects Parrot to Develop Spy Drone, DJI Manifold Supercomputer for Autonomous Operations, DHS voices Data Security Concerns for DJI
Our first new drone story this week is about the Aeromexico Boeing 737 plane that was initially reported to be damaged by a drone collision in December 2018. NTSB, after extensive investigations, have debunked this theory. According to NTSB, 737’s radome (a dome-like shell at the nose of the aircraft), already weakened due to poor repairs, was unable to withstand the change of air pressure during descent. As was the case with the alleged drone sightings in Gatwick and Newark, this news story again highlights the misplaced fears over drone safety.
Our second big DJI News story is about the US Department of Homeland Security’s last week warning about data security issues with Chinese manufactured drones. Are these concerns valid or politically motivated? Are these constant streams of negative news disrupting the US drone industry? This topic serves as a good segue into our next story. The US Army has selected the French drone manufacturer, Parrot, as one of the organizations responsible for manufacturing a spy drone. Weighing less than 3 pounds, this drone will supposedly have a range of 2 miles.
In other DJI News, you will also learn about DJI Manifold, an onboard supercomputer that can facilitate autonomous drone operations. With greater computing power, onboard processing of LiDAR data might become possible in the future too. For all this and much more, tune in to our latest show now!
