What are the rules for flying drones over prisons?

Today’s question is about flying drones over prisons. Can you get into legal trouble for flying your drone over or near prison facilities?

Our caller, also named Paul is calling in today with an interesting question that has not been asked on ADU before. Paul wishes to use drones for conducting solar inspections. However, the solar farm is located right next to the state prison. While the prison authorities are willing to cooperate with Paul, are there any laws that prevent drone pilots from flying over and near prisons?

Best Practices for Marking Ground Control Points

Today’s question is about ground control points. While processing data, how can you ensure that your GCP markers do not get pixelated on zooming in?

Our caller, Chris has come up with a great question today about drone mapping and GCPs. Specifically, he is finding it difficult to precisely mark Ground Control Points as the markers are prone to pixelation on zooming in. Now, Chris is using a high-end X4S camera that is known to capture sharp images. What steps can Chris take to overcome this issue and properly mark GCP’s so that mapping accuracy is not compromised?

To help Chris out, we reveal the three most likely factors that could be causing this pixelation issue – camera sensor, altitude, and focal length. Further, we also reveal the importance of using big and easily discernible GCP’s. So, what exactly is the ideal size of a GCP marker? The American Security Drone Act of 2019, How the delayed launch of Remote ID is preventing drone technology from taking off, Drone Deliveries, Fall-out of US-China Trade Wars and much, much more…

The first story for today is about the American Security Drone Act of 2019. This act will prevent government agencies from utilizing federal funds to buy Chinese-manufactured drones. With many government agencies like fire departments and first responders primarily relying on DJI drones like Phantom and Mavic, this proposed ban could have a huge effect. Is this proposed ban harsh and uncalled for?

Next, we discuss how the delayed launch of Remote ID is preventing drone technology from truly taking off. Remote ID or Drone ID allows authorities to detect drones using systems like DJI Aeroscope. This will enhance drone safety, and eventually lead to wider adoption of drone technology. However, hindered by organizational constraints and resource limitations, the FAA is unlikely to implement this much-needed system anytime soon. In this segment of the show, we debate if we need a federal agency dedicated solely to the unmanned industry.

This serves as a good segue to our next topic – Drone Deliveries. Many nations (including developing ones) have been quick to realize the immense benefits of drone deliveries. Drone Crash? Who is Liable?

Today’s show is about potential liabilities due to a drone crash. Can an organization be held liable for property damage and bodily harm due to a drone crash?

Peter, our caller is a high school teacher is perturbed by a drone flying over his school premises. Particularly, Peter is worried that the drone might crash and damage property or even worse, hurt a student. In today’s show, Peter is wondering if his school can be held liable should such an event occur.

This is an interesting scenario that we have not previously discussed on Ask Drone U. We all know that the FAA is responsible for airspace safety. But, can a school be in legal trouble for a drone crashing and potentially hurting a student? And, can the school prevent the drone from flying over their premises?
