Our biggest news story this week is about the DJI Mavic Air 2. DJI has released this much-awaited drone, albeit in difficult market conditions. We managed to get our hands on one of the first pieces of this new drone, and have an in-depth review of you in today’s show. We discuss camera sensors, flight time, and low-light capabilities in this segment of the show. Can the DJI Mavic Air prove to be a good replacement for the Mavic 2 Pro and Phantom 4 Pro? Can you build a sustainable and long-term business with this new DJI drone? We discuss all this and much more in this segment of the show.
In our next story, you will learn that in the wake of the virus outbreak, the FAA has now made it possible for Part 107 pilots to renew their licenses online. This is certainly a welcome development, and you can check out this article for step-by-step renewal information.
This serves as a good segue for our next story – which is about drone deliveries. UPS has started using drone deliveries to serve a retirement community in Florida. Because our seniors are most susceptible to the virus, this is a great move as doing so allows delivery providers to adhere to social distancing norms. Here, we reveal that it might be possible for Part 107 pilots to make drone deliveries with an EVLOS waiver.
Other topics discussed in today’s show include the latest updates on DJI Matrice 300, Skydio 2 for public safety, and the many benefits of flying in Atti mode. For all this and much, much more, don’t miss out latest drone news show. Fly safe!

Welcome to another awesome episode of Ask Drone U.
Today we are going to be discussing the state of the industry. How has the virus changed things? Where does remote ID go from here? Who’s winning and losing in the wake of the virus? What are drone pilots / DSP’s supposed to do?
And finally we will end by discussing the Mavic Air 2 release during the virus. Will this drone fall on deaf ears?
Today, many pilots will be joining us to provide different perspectives on the state of the industry and their particular industry verticals.

Today’s question is about replacing LiDAR with photogrammetry for surveying purposes. Can photogrammetry prove to be a feasible option?
Our caller for today, Issac is using ground-based LiDAR for surveying purposes. Regular ADU listeners might be aware of the difference between LiDAR and photogrammetry. LiDAR is an active technology costing thousands of dollars. Whereas, photogrammetry is the art of using images for making measurements. Photogrammetry is way more affordable compared to LiDAR and can help you produce lifelike and visually-appealing models.
But, what about accuracy? Using photogrammetry, can you achieve survey-grade accuracy that is comparable to LiDAR?

Today’s question is about renewing your Part 107 certificate in the wake of the virus outbreak.
Our caller, Jaime works as an emergency manager in public health in South Carolina. When he is not on the frontlines bravely fighting the virus outbreak, Jaime also takes up drone jobs as a Part 107 pilot.
Now, Jaime’s Part 107 license is due for renewal shortly. But with the lockdown in effect, he cannot possibly renew his certificate right now. What should Jaime do? Can Jaime continue flying without getting into trouble with the FAA?
Excellent question, Jaime. Certainly, many of you must be worried about renewing your Part 107 certificate given the current situation. With all CATS testing centers shut down, is there any way to renew your certificate? If not, will your insurance company process your claim in the event of a drone crash? For all this and much, much more, tune in to today’s show now! Fly safe!

Today’s question is about creating 3D models for real estate interiors AND exteriors.
Our caller for today, Luke is a project manager who restores old buildings. He owns a Phantom 4 Pro V2 that he wants to use for drone mapping and modeling. However, due to the nature of his work, Luke wants to map real estate interiors as well as exteriors. Additionally, he also wishes to use his drone maps for making measurements. What is the best way forward for Luke?
In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the use of 3D drone maps as a real estate marketing tool has simply gone through the roof. With lockdown and social distancing in effect, prospective buyers are reluctant to step out for a property walkthrough. This has created an amazing business opportunity for drone pilots who are aware of the nuances of drone mapping and modeling.
But, while you can capture real estate exteriors using a drone, what is the best and most efficient way of capturing real estate interiors? And, how can you integrate an interior map with an exterior map to build an interactive model? Paul suggests a great hack that can save you thousands of dollars. This show will be particularly interesting to those who are looking for some money-making opportunities in these trying times. Tune in now!

Today’s question is about the best and most affordable computer system for drone mapping.
Our caller for today, Scott is a real estate appraiser who is keen on getting into drone mapping. Being a longtime ADU listener, Scott is well aware that he needs a powerful computing system for processing drone maps. But such high-end systems can be really expensive and end up costing thousands of dollars.
So, what is the best option for Scott? Can he get a suitable system with enough computing power without burning a huge hole in his pocket?
Great question, Scott. It is important to buy a powerful mapping computer, especially if you want to run a voluminous mapping business. To help Scott out, Paul shares the specifications for the mapping computer that we, at Drone U use to process mapping data. Additionally, you also will learn how you can save thousands of dollars by building your mapping computer. Tune in for some excellent business tips! Fly safe!

Our biggest story this week is about the DJI Mavic Air 2. Recent FCC filings have corroborated our initial reports that a new Mavic Air 2 is indeed in the works. Like its larger cousins, the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, these filings suggest that this new DJI drone will come in two variants as well.
Considering the ongoing virus outbreak, we speculate why there is a strong possibility that DJI might come out with a variant that is tailored specifically for public safety. Additionally, because this drone will weigh more than 250 grams, it will come with ADS-B receivers for enhanced airspace safety. For more detailed insights on this topic, check out this story where our Flying Dutchman, Haye goes down the rabbit hole to give you a sneak peek at this much-awaited drone.
Our next story is about the coronavirus and its impact on the drone industry. As the virus outbreak has caused the world economy to come to a grinding halt, the drone industry is struggling as well. Particularly, industry leader, DJI’s worries have been further compounded as it was already grappling with an unfavorable political climate in the United States.
What steps is DJI taking to protect its business? We speculate how DJI might start new product lines that attract less stringent regulations. Additionally, DJI is taking active measures to enlighten the establishment and the public on how drones can be used for the greater good.
Do you think the security concerns about the use of Chinese drones are justified? Do we really have a good alternative to DJI drones? Will a ban on Chinese drones end up doing irreparable harm to the American consumer and the drone industry as a whole?
This serves as a good segue into our next topic where we discuss how the coronavirus has opened up some amazing business opportunities for drone pilots. With social distancing becoming the norm now, traditional real estate marketing in the form of open houses and walkthroughs is simply not possible. In this segment, we discuss how real estate agents can use 3D modeling and VR to showcase a property. Additionally, we reveal a great hack for drone pilots which can result in a compressed and more efficient workflow. You can check out our article where we go over all this in much more in great depth.
Other topics discussed on this show are using drones for detecting body temperatures, drones for public safety, new DJI drones in 2020, drone deliveries and much, much more!
We hope you enjoy this show. Tune in now!
