Today’s question is about the best GPS systems for use in Sierra Leone, Africa.
Our caller for today, Rakiatu is from Sierra Leone, Africa. Rakiatu wishes to start a drone mapping business in her hometown and is wondering which is the best GPS system for her. Can the right GPS system enable Rakiatu to procure accurate mapping data in Africa?
Great question, Rakiatu. The different RTK and PPK GPS systems that professional mappers typically use in the United States do not work in Sierra Leone. Considering all this, what is the best option for Rakiatu? We lay out the different options and discuss their pros and cons to help out Rakiatu.
Thanks for the great question. Fly Safe!

Our biggest story this week is about the French drone manufacturer, Parrot.
While promoting their latest launch, Parrot targeted DJI on the topic of data security. Regular ADU listeners might recall that the NY Times had recently pointed out security weaknesses in DJI’s Android app. But, is there any credence to these reports? Should you worry about data security if you are not connected to the internet?
If you are a DJI pilot and are interested in this topic, you might want to check out our blog post, How to Fly Chinese Drone Without Risking Security.
Our next story is about the impact of COVID on the drone industry. While COVID has drastically impacted some drone pilots, others have never been busier. Particularly, our Drone U members have seen a massive surge in demand. One particular end-use that is seen a huge uptick is interactive 3D modeling. So, what is interactive 3D modeling? Can you protect and even grow your drone business by learning such nuanced skills? And, how can Drone U help you out here?
Other topics discussed in today’s show include flying under TFR’s, the rising use of drone sprayers, using drones to clean beaches in Japan, and drones as first responders.
We hope you enjoy the show!

We have an interesting two-part question today. Our first part of the show is about making drone battery voltage appear on the main screen. And the second part is about getting a clean feed when recording on the DJI Crystalsky.
Our caller, Zach flies a Mavic Air and is bugged by the fact that he cannot see battery voltage on the main screen. Can Zach hack the Mavic Air to address this issue? Additionally, the feed on his DJI Crystal Sky is pretty choppy. Is it normal for drone pilots to get a choppy feed when recording in 2.7K 30 fps?
Interesting questions, Zach. If you are a professional drone pilot or training to be one, listening to this show will help you understand the importance of safe drone flight. Also, if, like Zach, you are unable to get a clean transmission, Paul has some great tips to help you out. Tune in now. Fly Safe!

Today’s show is about what you need to do once you crash your drone. What steps can you follow to accurately check the extent of damage on your drone?
Our caller for today, Martin had signed up for the Drone U’s Virtual Flight Mastery class. In preparation for the class, Martin was flying some practice drills on an empty soccer field. Due to a strong gust of wind, he lost control of his drone, a Mavic 2 Pro, and ended up crashing into a building. So how can Martin make sure his drone is okay and ready to fly? Is there a checklist that Martin can follow to check the extent of damage on his Mavic 2 Pro?
Great question, Martin. To help him out, we first reveal some simple precautions that a drone pilot MUST follow to avert a potential crash. From our “Thumbs up, Butter Cup” rule to the importance of orientation, there is a lot that you will learn in this segment of the show.
Next, we get to the moot point. What should you do once you crash your drone? How can you thoroughly check the damage and your drone and make sure it is okay to fly? Paul explains in four simple steps. Here, you will learn 1) How to check your drone motors for damage 2) How to clean your obstacle avoidance sensors 3) How to check for physical damage, and 4) How to calibrate your IMU and compass.
This show is loaded with some great nuggets guaranteed to help both new and experienced pilots.
Enjoy! And, Fly Safe!

How can you protect your expensive drone equipment so that it does not go kaput? And, what are some common-sense measures that you can take to stay adequately hydrated while you are out flying?
Todd’s next question is about flying over cargo ships. Are cargo ships considered as critical infrastrucuture? Do drones laws prevent you from flying over cargo ships? We also discuss whether you are likely to run into any magnetic interference issues if you fly too close to a ship.
Thanks for the great question, Todd. Fly Safe!
