Recently the Drone U team was sent a compromising email that showcased that Air Map was actively supporting the Fienstein drone federalism bill, the drone innovation act which both promote a patchwork of local drone laws. Essentially these bills would empower local authorities to have control over the airspace up to 200 feet, creating a climate of chaos for drone pilots. Should pilots support Air Map when they are attempting to take the Federal Aviation’s Authority away?

This episode is all about TFRs or Temporary Flight Restrictions. In case you are unaware, there is a special classification of TFR that prohibits flight during “VIP Movement”. In short, this means that drones are prohibited from flying when the president, a senator or anyone else with a VIP designation is in the area.
Dave and Josh from Nashville called in to clarify whether or not the VIP TFR applied to everyone or only Part 107 drone pilots. In response, we talk a little bit about what constitutes a VIP Movement restriction and who they apply to. Additionally, we discuss TFR waivers and how you can apply for one.
A list of current Temporary Flight Restrictions is maintained at tfr.faa.gov.

Today’s episode should be helpful for anyone who’s afraid to fly their drone. After all, many drone pilots have a fear of flying. Drones are expensive and no one wants to crash a costly piece of equipment they spent so much money on.
Scott from North Carolina calls in to ask if we have any advice on getting over the fear of flying. We talk about ways to build confidence, to let go of your fears and to accept failure. If you’re afraid to fly your drone, it will take some time to truly get over your fear of flying. With patience and practice, however, you’ll learn to not be afraid of flying your drone.
Thanks for a great question, Scott! Fly safe!

The City of Newton Massachusetts attempted to inhibit flight over the whole city for any drone or UAV. The city also passed additional ordinances attempting to create a drone registry for owners, but thanks to Dr. Micheal Singer the ordinances were nullified.
Dr. Singer sued the City of Newton in Federal District Court which was decided yesterday, Dr. Singer won the case on a conflict of preemption. Essentially the courts stated that the city had no authority to regulate the airspace over the city. How will this affect future city ordinances, listen in to hear the scoop!

Today’s episode is about airspace authorizations and waivers. Todd in Cleveland asked us to clarify the difference between the two. Filing for an authorization will grant you certain access to airspace while obtaining a waiver means something else entirely, so we do our best to outline the differences. Additionally, we talk about the future of authorizations and how the process might look in the future.
More information on airspace authorizations and waivers is available in our How To Apply for an Airspace Authorization(UPDATED 2017) video.

Today’s episode is all about using drone for security and law enforcement. We take a call from Jeremy in Westchester County, NY, who wants to know how he can convince his employer to incorporate drones into the work they do. Jeremy works for a security company that deals with residential burglary and fire alarm systems as well as radio transmissions between police stations and schools.
In an attempt to answer Jeremy’s questions, we talk about how security firms and law enforcement are already utilizing drones. We also talk about how these professions may use drones in the future. Paul, for one, is convinced that drone mapping can be used to solve all crime. Thanks for sparking such an interesting conversation Jeremy. Good luck and fly safe!
